Move to ban smoking in outdoor dining areas, beer gardens, at bus stops and in doorways

Sat 25th February, 2012

The health minister for New South Wales in Australia has announced plans to introduce sweeping new restrictions on outdoor smoking.

Jillian Skinner wants to ban smoking in all commercial outdoor dining areas from 2015.

Smoking will also be banned in playgrounds, public sports grounds, swimming pools, transport stops, including taxi ranks, hospital grounds and entrances to public buildings.

"The aim of this is to reduce the number of people who are smoking, and to reduce the exposure to people, particularly children and families, of third-party tobacco smoke,’" Ms Skinner said.
